Henry Gower

Technician Fourth Grade Henry Gower, Medical Department, 302nd Infantry Regiment, United States Army, received recognition for heroic achievement for connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States in Germany from January 20th, 1945 to January 24th, 1945. When an enemy counter-attack reached a point within 40 yards of his aid station, Technician Gower steadfastly refused to move to the rear. Disregarding incessant artillery, mortar, rocket and small arms fire, he continued to administer to the wounded. On one occasion, an enemy tank fired a shell point-blank through the aid station wall. Enemy machine guns and small arms fire denied him the use of one section of the aid station and a grenade was tossed into the building and exploded. Despite this and the fact that all windows were shattered and the upper stories of the house were destroyed by enemy artillery, Technician Gower continued with his work. Technician Gower's absolute disregard for personal safety, heroic determination, and deep concern for the welfare of others are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Medical Corps and the Military Service. He entered the Military Service from South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
